- צַיָּיד, צַיָּדm. (b. h.; צוּד) hunter, fowler, fisher. Gen. R. s. 19 לצפור … ביד צ׳ this is to be compared to a bird in the hand of a fowler. Erub.54b (ref. to Prov. 12:27 י̇ח̇ר̇ך̇) לא י̇ח̇יה ולא יאר̇יך̇ ימים צ׳ הרמאי the tricky hunter (the student whose object is to dazzle people with his erudition) shall not live and prolong his days; ib. צ׳ הרמאי יחרוך the shrewd hunter (the student that tries to learn and retain as much as possible) will roast his game (will become a scholar); Ab. Zar.19a. Ib. משל לצ׳ שצדוכ׳ Ms. M. (ed. לאדם) like a fowler that catches many birds ; Erub. l. c.
